The Ideal way to harness the sun's power

Ideal Solar
Ideal has always been at the forefront
of developing systems to reduce energy
consumption, leading the change to
highly efficient condensing boilers in
the 1980s. Now Ideal Solar offers a
simple way to harness Solar energy,
to reduce carbon emissions and
energy bills.
Solar energy can be readily obtained
whether the day is bright sunlight or
even when cloudy. Solar collectors
absorb the sun's rays and convert that
energy to produce hot water in the
home. They supplement the normal
hot water storage system and in
summer will provide most of the HW
needs. Even in winter boiler usage will
be reduced. Overall a solar system
reduces carbon emissions and our
impact on our environment.
The technology is straightforward and
readily understood. It offers one of the
most simple ways to reduce energy
bills using renewable energy. Ideal has
engineered a high quality solar
package aimed at ease of selection,
simplicity of installation and combined
with full technical support, training and
design service (if eligible).

Solar water heating
system
A solar thermal system comprises four
main elements to generate heat, control
and store it. A simple loop circuit
transfers heat from the panels to a twin
coil solar hot water storage cylinder.
The solar panels are connected to the
lower coil whilst the upper cylinder coil
is supplied by the heating boiler as a
normal system. A schematic diagram
shows a typical layout for a house:
As the climate changes and fossil fuels
deplete, it makes sense to harness
solar energy now.

Solar Panel
The solar panels generate heat and are
roof mounted to obtain maximum
energy from the sun. The number of
panels is determined by the size of
household, and the average UK house
will use two. A solar panel consists of
an array of copper tubes between
headers and contains the system fluid.
Each tube is ultrasonically welded to an
absorber plate which has a selective
coating to enhance energy absorption.
The array is sealed into an aluminium
casing with dense insulation at the rear
to minimise energy losses, and a low
iron, tempered glass at front. The glass
is chosen to allow maximum energy
through to the absorber but to be
extremely robust. It is also self cleaning
for long term benefits.
The solar fluid is circulated by the
Pump Station to the lower coil of a twin
coil storage cylinder where it transfers
heat to the stored Hot Water contained
in the cylinder ready for use. It is then
pumped back to the solar panel to be
heated again and so the cycle
continues.
Pump Station
This consists of a variable speed pump
together with flow meter to set the
system flow rate. Check valves with flow
and return thermometers provide easy
use. As the solar circuit is a sealed
system, the required pressure relief
valve and gauge is provided here.
This forms a pre insulated package
for neatness and speedy installation.
The expansion vessel is also fitted at
this point.
Solar Controller
The controller provides the temperature
selection setting for the cylinder and
uses two temperature sensors to
determine when the pump is run to
gain solar energy from the panels. The
solar panel temperature must always
be more than 4ºC greater than the
cylinder before the controller allows the
pump to run. An animated display
shows system operation with system
temperatures.

Orientation
The heat generated from solar panels is
maximised when the panel is sited to
face south. Good solar savings are still
obtained when panels are at an angle
to due south as the following diagram
shows. For the average UK installation
mounting at approximately 30-45
degrees to horizontal is satisfactory.
Energy Performance
Even on cloudy days diffuse radiation
can be captured by the solar panels,
so that energy is obtained even in
winter. During the summer months,
with both direct and diffuse radiation,
it is possible that all hot water energy
needs can be obtained. Averaged out
over the year around 50-60% of a
typical households needs can be
provided by a solar system. The benefit
is dependent on orientation, angle,
latitude and shading.
Roof mounting
A range of mounting systems allow
panels to be fitted in the most
appropriate manner for the property.
- Standard supply allows mounting
on a pitched roof, with optional fixing
arrangements for different roof
coverings. For neater installations,
optional inset mounting kits can
be used.
- Flat Roof frame kits allow solar panel
installation where roof pitch or
orientation is not suitable.

Planning Permission
It is recommended that prior to any
installation being undertaken, the
Local Authority Planning Dept. should
be contacted. They should be able
to advise whether planning permission
is required.
Grants
The Low Carbon Buildings Programme
offers grants for private or non-profit
organisation solar installations, subject
to conditions. This scheme can provide
5% VAT for installations by an
accredited contractor.
Cylinders
Building Regulations Domestic Heating
Compliance Guide recommends 25
litres solar storage / m2 of solar
collector, in addition to normal DHW
storage volume. A typical two collector
system therefore will require
approximately 200litre solar cylinder,
dependent upon usage.
