What are High Efficiency Boilers?

A high efficiency condensing boiler is the most efficient boiler available. It converts more than 86% of the fuel it uses into heat, compared to 78% for conventional types.

There are two bands of High Efficiency boilers:

SEDBUK A High Efficiency condensing boilers have a primary heat exchanger which saves heat that would normally escape up the flue in normal boilers. This reduces the temperature of the flue gases to a point where water vapour (or condensate) produced during combustion is 'condensed out'. Hence the name 'High Efficiency condensing boiler'. SEDBUK B boilers have a similar process but contain a secondary heat exchanger.

High Efficiency products are favourable for the environment and provide substantial cost savings to householders. An interesting fact to know is that if everyone in the UK installed a high efficiency boiler, there is the potential to save enough money to pay the entire annual fuel and power bills of over two million households.

High Efficiency condensing boilers are established products and can be fitted to most new and old heating systems. Your installer will find all our products easy to install and site with very little disruption to your home during replacement/installation.

Ideal Boilers offers a large range of High Efficiency boilers. Ideal's High Efficiency boilers are no larger than conventional or "Standard Efficiency" boilers. Infact Ideal Boilers range consist of some of the smallest boilers available on the market. The icos for example will fit easily inside a standard kitchen cupboard.

You can buy High Efficiency condensing boilers in different types. These are:

There is an easy way to decipher whether you have an efficient boiler. If your current boiler is between 10-15 years old then it is likely to be less efficient than the boilers Ideal now produce. If your boiler is quite old then replacing it with a new Ideal high efficiency condensing boiler with the right heat output for your home can save you up tp a third on your heating bills straight away. If your existing boiler is 15 years old or more, or needs a major repair, then replacing it altogether will avoid waste and expensive call outs. Similarly, if you're refitting your kitchen or bathroom, there is the opportunity to minimise cost and disruption by fitting a new High Efficiency condensing boiler at the same time.

High Efficiency boilers are also known as 'condensing' boilers because the term 'condensing' refers to a process that occurs in the highest efficiency boilers. By utilising a larger heat exchanger, or a secondary heat exchanger, more of the energy generated whilst the boiler is firing is extracted to heat the water thus reducing wasted energy.

High Efficiency boilers produce occasional 'plumes of condensate', which can be seen exiting the flue. Condensate is produced from flue gas at a temperature of 54°C.
What is Pluming?

Installing a high-efficiency (condensing boiler) realises the highest annual financial savings leading to the shortest payback period for an energy savings measure. This is achieved through 'sensible' heat gain by lowering exhaust temperature and latent heat gain when boiler temperature is lower than flue gas dew point.

The Ideal Solution

Ideal Boilers launched the first UK manufactured condensing boiler in 1985. Having produced High Efficiency boilers for longer than any other manufacturer in the UK, Ideal Boilers have the expertise and experience to meet and exceed any customer heating needs.

Our latest High Efficiency range, which was initially launched in 2001, now comprises 23 different models, in 2005 we have launched four new boiler ranges mexico HE, classic HE, excel HE and mini HE. We have also recently launched an additional model to the icos system HErange - the HE 15 model.

The majority of boilers in our HE range have high component modularity and commonality. This means that component count is reduced by up to 75% and because industry standard parts are used, spares holdings are reduced by up to 75%.

Installation and servicing of all the boilers in the HE range is both simple and a standard process, indeed installations are now faster and there is less servicing needed due to the increased reliability our HE technology brings.
